Unable to log on to the ePO console - no login screen is displayed

Environment

ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO) 5.10.x

Problem 1

You can't log on to the ePO Console. The usual ePO login screen isn't shown and the following error messages are displayed:

In Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox:

An unexpected error occurred while trying to handle your request

In Internet Explorer:

The website cannot display the page - HTTP 500

Problem 2

The Orion.log file records the following errors:

2019-11-29 12:47:04,609 ERROR [main] plugin.PluginManager - Initialization of plugin core failed.
org.springframework.beans.factory.BeanCreationException: Error creating bean with name 'core.ext.taskGlobals' defined in resource loaded from byte array: Cannot resolve reference to bean 'core.webappDeployer' while setting bean property 'deployer'; nested exception is org.springframework.beans.factory.NoSuchBeanDefinitionException: No bean named 'core.webappDeployer' is defined
at org.springframework.beans.factory.support.BeanDefinitionValueResolver.resolveReference(BeanDefinitionValueResolver.java:359)

The Stderr.log file records the following errors:

INFO: Marking servlet deployer as unavailable
Nov 29, 2019 12:47:01 PM org.apache.catalina.core.StandardContext loadOnStartup
SEVERE: Servlet [deployer] in web application [/deployer] threw load() exception
java.lang.SecurityException: Access to class [class com.mcafee.orion.core.servlet.deployer.DeployerServlet] is forbidden. It is a restricted class (implements ContainerServlet interface). A web application must be configured as privileged to be able to load it

Cause

The file deployer.xml is missing from the path <ePO install folder>\Server\conf\Catalina\localhost

Solution

Perform the steps below to resolve this issue:

Stop the ePO application server service if it's running.
Download the deployer.zip file attached to this article.
Extract deployer.xml from it to the <ePO install folder>\Server\conf\Catalina\localhost folder.
Start the ePO application server service.

The extensions now load correctly and you can log on to the ePO console.
