Failed to enumerate domains, authentication required (when manually adding a system to the ePO System Tree)

Environment

ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO) 5.x

Problem 1

If you try to manually add a system to the ePO System Tree, you see a message requesting the following information:

Domain
User Name
Password

After you provide the information, you see the following error:

Failed to enumerate domains, authentication required

Problem 2

The EpoApSvr.log file records the following errors:

X #5092 usermgr Attempting to add user: <domain>/<user>
E #5092 NETENUM WNetOpenEnum 2 error 6118 from provider Microsoft Windows Network, description: The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available

The orion.log file records the following error:

Unable to enumerate domain, system error 64

Cause

Either of the following cause this issue:

There is no computer in the workgroup designated as the Master Browser.
NetBIOS over TCP/IP is not being used.

Solution 1

Enable the appropriate NetBIOS option on the desktop:

On the desktop, right-click My Network Places and select Properties.
Right-click the appropriate connection and select Properties.
Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties.
Click Advanced, then click the WINS tab.
Select the appropriate option below for your environment:
- If you are using a static Internet Protocol (IP) address, click Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.
- If you have a DHCP-assigned IP address, click Use NetBIOS setting from the DHCP server.
To save the settings, click OK.
Click Start, Run, type services.msc, and click OK.
Right-click Computer Browser and select Restart.

NOTE: This service maintains an updated list of computers on the network and supplies this list to computers designated as browsers. If this service is stopped, this list is not updated or maintained. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it fail to start.
Add the new system to ePO console again.

Solution 2

Contact Technical Support to continue troubleshooting the Computer Browser service and environment if:

The previous solution does not resolve the issue.
Error 6118 is still recorded in the EpoApSvr.log.

To contact Technical Support, go to the Create a Service Request page and log on to the ServicePortal.

If you are a registered user, type your User ID and Password, and then click Log In.
If you are not a registered user, click Register and complete the fields to have your password and instructions emailed to you.
