ePolicy Orchestrator upgrade fails to validate product compatibility

Environment

ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO) 5.10.x, 5.9.x

Problem 1

When the ePO upgrade runs the product compatibility check, it fails to validate installed extensions.

When you upgrade to a later version of ePO, the product compatibility list check fails.

When you run the command below to validate the current extension list, it fails:

https://<IP of ePO Server>:8443/remote/core.list-plugins.do

You see the following error in the browser:

Problem 2

Following the advice in KB85528 - Upgrade of ePolicy Orchestrator to 5.x without internet access can lead to broken product extensions to work around the problem and bypass the check also fails. The upgrade then fails to verify the ePO administrator credentials.

The VerifyEPOInfo.err log shows the following error:

Error encountered while running command:core.help

java.io.IOException: Error 0 :
For input string: ""

The Orion.log file records the following error when the problem occurs:

ERROR [http-nio-8443-exec-3] servlet.ControllerServlet - Exception thrown by ActionBean
java.lang.NumberFormatException: For input string: ""
at java.lang.NumberFormatException.forInputString(NumberFormatException.java:65)

Cause

A blank entry for the orion.upload.max.size value in the orion.properties configuration file causes this issue. The null value prevents the Tomcat service from correctly interpreting and applying the value orion.upload.max.size=.

Workaround

To resolve this problem, take the following actions:

Stop the ePO services on the ePO server:
1. Press Windows+R. The Run Window is displayed.
2. Type services.msc and click OK.
3. Right-click each of the following ePO services and select Stop:
  - McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator #.#.# Application Server
  - McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator #.#.# Event Parser
  - McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator #.#.# Server
4. Keep the services window open.
Open the orion.properties file in a text editor. The file is located under the ePO installation folder ..\Server\conf\orion.
Locate the line that starts with orion.upload.max.size=.
Add the default value for that parameter where orion.upload.max.size=1073741824.
Save the file.
Start the ePO services:
1. Open the services window.
2. Right-click each of the following ePO services and click Start:
  - McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator #.#.# Application Server
  - McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator #.#.# Event Parser
  - McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator #.#.# Server
3. Close the services window.

You can now successfully upgrade ePO to a later version.
