Developer verification error seen when you install McAfee Agent on the macOS 10.15

Environment

McAfee Agent (MA) 5.6.0 - 5.6.5

Problem

You see an unexpected pop-up error when you install MA on macOS 10.15 (Catalina) or later:

"McAfeeSmartInstall" cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified.

macOS cannot verity that the app is free from malware.

You see this error when you install MA via an installation URL method. For example, when using the SmartInstaller.

Cause

The ePO Server information is embedded in McAfeeSmartInstall.app when the McAfeeSmartInstall.app is downloaded onto a Mac operating system.

This design negates the code signing of the application. As a result, the developer identity validation for the McAfeeSmartInstall application fails and the error is shown.

Solution

This issue is resolved with McAfee Agent 5.6.6.

Issue resolutions in updates and major releases are cumulative; Technical Support recommends that you install the latest version. To find the most recent release for your product, go to the Product Downloads site.

Workaround 1

You can safely ignore this message and bypass the warning with these steps:

Click Cancel.
Open System Preferences.
Open Security & Privacy.
Click Allow Anyway in front of the notification McAfeeSmartinstall.app was blocked from use because it is not from an Identified Developer.
Run McAfeeSmartInstall.app.

Workaround 2

This issue only impacts McAfee Agent URL-based installations. For example, SmartInstaller installations. If you use ePO on-premises, use any of the other following supported installation and deployment methods:

Manual installs using install.sh.
Pushing the agent install from ePO.
Deployment task from ePO for an upgrade from an older version.
