NSX-T registration fails with MOVE 4.10.x with error: Unrecognized character escape (code 65)

Problem

Move 4.10.x supports the NSX-T environment 3.2.x. The following error is displayed on the ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO) console - Move AntiVirus deployment page when trying to register it.

Registration Failed error

Messages similar to the following are recorded in orion.log when debug logging is enabled:

For more information, enable the MOVE logger to write logs in DEBUG.

Open the URL https://<EPOIP>:<console port>/core/config-log.
Log on using the ePO console - administrator credentials.
To open another tab, click the '+' sign and type the logger name.

Logger 1: com.mcafee.move select "DEBUG" from the drop down

Logger 2: com.mcafee.dccommon select "DEBUG" from the drop down

Click SAVE.

Cause

This error happens when you use a Windows authentication user to log on to ePO and try to register NSX-T.

In Windows authentication, users can be assigned either dynamically or manually. If a user is assigned dynamically, the username is in the format of domain name\user. For example, the username of the user logged into ePO is trellix\rgc.
Here, MOVE doesn't understand this syntax (domain name followed by a back slash) when connecting to NSX-T for registration.

The VMware API for serviceinsertion doesn't properly handle the "\" character in the domain name\user of the ePO account used within this API for NSX-T registration. The character is treated similar to the escape character instead of a string value.

Solution

Perform the NSX registration from the ePO console by following the steps below:

Open the ePO console and click the Move Antivirus deployment page.
Click the Service menu.
Select NSX-T manager - Move service registration page to register the NSX-T.
If the error displayed is Registration failed, from the Actions tab, click Register.
Check the orion.log from the ePO-installed server. The orion.log path is <ePO installed folder>\server\logs\.

We recommend using only an ePO authentication user with the administrator user.
Windows authentication with a dynamically created user has the syntax domain name followed by a back slash and the username. Sometimes, this information isn't read from NSX-T through an API call by MOVE DC_Common extensions to register through ePO. To register successfully, create an ePO authentication user with administrator rights or use the administrator user.
