Summary

This article describes how to use a DETech Standalone disk to boot a problem computer.

Use this procedure in the following scenarios:

When DE fails to start
When the logon screen isn't displayed, making it impossible to access the computer

Solution

Create a DETech Standalone boot disk
For instructions to create the bootable media, see the DE 7.2.x DETech User Guide.

Prerequisites
Before you continue with this task, you must have the following:

A DETech (Standalone) boot disk created
Floppy drive or USB containing the Recovery Information File (.xml)
Daily Authorization/Access code

NOTE: Users with a valid support contract with us can obtain the daily Authorization code from the ServicePortal or Technical Support. For more information, see KB61073 - How to obtain the Endpoint Encryption Code of the Day.

Recovery procedure

Restart your computer using the DETech (Standalone) boot disk. This action loads the DETech interface.
Authorize with the daily Authorization code and confirm the authorization status.
Under Actions, click Enable USB, and then click OK.
You see the DETech dialog window with the 'USB enabled' message.
Under Authentication, click File, and select the Recovery Information File (.xml). You can select a floppy disk or USB drive, and then click OK.
The Authentication status changes to 'Authenticated with File.'
Under Actions, click Emergency Boot.
You see the DETech emergency boot operating system message.
To confirm the emergency boot, click OK.

NOTES:

The above actions can modify the MBR. When the system boots into Windows, if there's a network connection to the ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO) server, the system synchronizes with ePO and fully repairs itself. To confirm the status, right-click the McAfee Agent Tray, and then click Quick Settings, Drive Encryption status.
If the McAfee Agent can't establish a connection with the ePO Server, continue to use the DETech Emergency Boot option to boot the system until a connection to the server is made.
