Using a Japanese keyboard (Japanese locale operating system), the Yen key (
¥) inserts a different character in preboot, and then in Windows.
- In Windows
The Yen keyboard character (¥) and backslash (\) are both recognized as the same character. Pressing the backslash key (\) generates the Yen character (¥).
NOTE: The above is by default because of a Windows feature. This feature allows pop-up menus to be configured that allow the backslash character (\) to generate the Yen character (¥). This feature doesn't work during preboot because the Windows operating system isn't loaded.
- During Preboot Authentication
- Pressing the Yen key (¥) does not generate the expected Yen character (¥) in preboot, causing the authentication to fail.
- Pressing the backslash key (\) does unexpectedly insert the required Yen character (¥).
