Unable to find any valid repository (McAfee Agent System Event Notification service is not running)

Environment

McAfee Agent (MA) 5.x

Problem

When the MA update executes, it fails with the following error when it tries to connect with the repository:

#528 creposi Trying the repository <repository name>
X #528 creposi downloadFile,SiteStat.xml,C:\Windows\TEMP
X #528 downloader Checking for network connectivity.
#528 downloader Network is down
#528 downloader Network is down, update from remote site can't be done.
X #528 creposi Can't download SiteStat.xml file

I #528 SessMgr Unable to find any valid repository

System Change

This error occurs after you:

Disable the System Event Notification service
Or
Upgrade to MA 5.x or later.

Cause

MA relies on the System Event Notification service to validate the logged on user account. When MA can't complete this action, network connectivity validation fails. The result is that it prevents the McAfee Agent from establishing a connection to the repository.

Solution

Enable and start the System Event Notification service:

Click Start, Run, type services.msc, and click OK.
Right-click System Event Notification Service and select Properties.
Select Automatic from the Startup type drop-down list, and click Start.
Click OK.
