Virtual Machines (VMs)

Problem

The Number of virtual machines available in the ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO) System Tree does not correctly report all VMs (some do not display), as displayed in the vCenter.

The VMs in the ePO System Tree are not listed in the correct group.

Cause

Duplicate host names map to a single entry on the System Tree. Because of an ePO limitation, it is applicable to all types of assets, including:

VMs, Hypervisor-Hosts
SVAs
Guest introspection VMs

The issue can occur when there is more than one computer with the same DNS name or NetBIOS name. The issue can occur even if they reside in different domains and have different domain extensions.

Examples:

mycomputer.connector.com
mycomputer.trellix.com

When these two computers are pulled into ePO, the first VM is added, and the second VM gets rejected by the matching criteria.

NOTE: The properties of the second computer are added to the first computer because the two are considered to be a single system.

Solution

Technical Support highly recommends that the system names of Hosts and VMs are unique across the organization, which is usually the case when systems are part of a Windows Active Directory (AD).

Workaround 1

Remove duplicate computer names. You can use the Microsoft System Preparation Tool, Sysprep, to complete this action.

Workaround 2

For the ePO System Tree to reflect all VMs with the same name, add the column VM Name to the ePO System Tree. This column tracks the Guest introspection VM by their VM names instead of their host name.
