FAILURE: Unable to connect to the SQL Server while running the SQL command

Environment

ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO) 5.x

Problem

Installation of an ePO update fails.

The EPO5x0-Error.Ini log records the following:

ErrorString=FAILURE: Unable to connect to the SQL Server while running the SQL command.

The EPO5x0-CommonSetup.Log records the following errors:

Entered GetServerInfo function.
Calculating the DataSource for your SQL Server.
UDP port is enabled so using standard DataSource convention.
DataSource used: [<sqlservername>\MSSQLSERVER]
Setting connection string DataSource to [<sqlservername>\MSSQLSERVER].
Connection string set for SQL Authentication database connection.
SQL::connect to server <sqlservername>\MSSQLSERVER
Testing SQL Authentication to SQL Server.
Failed to connect to SQL Server [<sqlservername>\MSSQLSERVER] with error code [0x80004005]
Description for error code is [[DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (ParseConnectParams()).]Invalid connection.]
Failed in connectToSQLServer with error code [0].
Exiting GetServerInfo with return code: 2

Cause

During the ePO update installation or upgrade, you added an instance name. The instance name is similar to the following in the Database Server field on the Database Information page:

<sqlservername>\MSSQLSERVER

During the installation of SQL Server, you selected the Default option for Instance Configuration. But, if you select the Default option, do not add the instance name during ePO installation or upgrade.

Solution

Remove the instance name from the Database Server field on the Database Information page. Leave only the server name:

Start the ePO installation of the ePO Update.
On the Database Information page, remove the instance name from the Database Server field. Leave only the server name.
Click Next to continue the installation.
