To back up an ePO database using SQL Server Management Studio:
NOTES:
- If you use the SQL Server Express Edition that ships with ePO, you can download SQL Server Management Studio Express. The latest version is available on the Microsoft downloads page.
- The steps in this article apply to all editions of SQL Server, including SQL Server Express, regardless of whether you use SQL Server Management Studio or SQL Server Management Studio Express.
IMPORTANT: In ePO 5.10 and later, threat event information has been split into its own database, so it is required to back up both databases. Carry out the backup process on both the main database (default name ePO_<ePO_server_name>) and the events database (default name ePO_<ePO_server_name>_Events).
- Open SQL Server Management Studio.
-
Type the logon and password information for the account specified and click Connect.
-
Expand Databases.
- Right-click the ePO database, where the default name is ePO_<ePO_server_name>, and select Tasks, Back Up.
- In the Database drop-down field, select the ePO_<ePO_server_name> database to be backed up.
- In the Backup type drop-down field, click Full.
- In the Name field, type a name for the backup set. For example, ePO Primary Backup.
- In the Description field, type a description of the backup. For example, ePO Full Backup.
- In the Destination section, if a backup set exists, and is listed in the Back up to field, select it, and click Remove.
- Click Add, select the File name entry, type the full path to the backup file (for example, e:\DATA\ BACKUPS\ePO.BAK), and click OK.
- In the Select a page section on the left pane, click Options.
- Under Reliability, select Verify backup when finished.
- In the Set backup compression drop-down field, select Compress backup.
NOTES:
- The Set Backup Compression option is available only in SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Edition and later versions of SQL Server.
- Backup compression is not supported with SQL Server Express Edition.
- Click OK.

To restore an ePO database using SQL Server Management Studio:
NOTE: The steps in this article apply to all editions of SQL Server, including SQL Server Express, regardless of whether you use SQL Server Management Studio or SQL Server Management Studio Express.
IMPORTANT: In ePO 5.10 and later, threat event information has been split into its own database, so it is required to restore both databases. Carry out the restore process on both the main database and the events database.
- Open SQL Server Management Studio.
-
Type the logon and password information for the account specified and click Connect.
- Expand Databases.
- Right-click the ePO database where the default name is ePO_<ePO_server_name> and select Tasks, Restore, Database.
- In the Destination for Restore section, for the To database drop-down field, type the name of the database.
NOTES:
- If you want to restore from backup and overwrite the existing ePO database, select the database name. For example, ePO_<ePO_server_name>.
- To retain your existing ePO database, and restore the backup in the same server, follow the steps below.
- Rename the existing database. For example, ePO_<ServerName>_Old.
- Create a folder where the database needs to be restored.
- To restore to an existing data files location, before restoring the database, obtain the file location details:
- Right-click Database Properties
- Click Files.
You see a column named Path, which contains the data file location.
After you obtain the file location, create a folder under it, and note down the complete path.
IMPORTANT: If you restore the ePO 5.10 events database, you must keep it the same original name because it is linked to the main ePO database by a synonym. When you restore the database by any other name than the original, that link is broken.
- Select the From device option under Source for restore and click the ellipsis (...).
- Click Add in the Specify Backup window.
- In the Locate Backup File window, navigate to the backup file (for example, C:\Backup\Full_backup_20150630_epo.bak) and click OK.
- Select the checkbox in the Restore column for the Select the backup sets to restore and select the backup set to restore.
NOTE: If you have more than one backup in the chosen media set, choose the backup set you want to restore by selecting it from the list of backup sets. (If you have more than one backup, it is usually the .bak file.)
- If the database is being restored on the same server, you need to change the file location.
- To change the data file location click Files, and select the checkbox “Relocate all the files to folder'
- Paste the new path.
- Click Options in the Select a page section on the left pane.
- If you are restoring over an existing ePO database as in step 5 above, Under Restore options, select Overwrite the existing database (WITH REPLACE).
NOTE: You might need to stop the ePO services and close any open connections to the ePO database before you can restore over it.
- Click OK.
