Environment

McAfee Agent (MA) 5.7.0-5.7.2, 5.6.x

Linux operating systems

Problem

Although the installation of the McAfee Agent on a Linux system is successful, the agent services do not start.

The installation script shows the error below in a terminal window for a manual install:

Registering the start up script...
Writing proxy env detail in /etc/ma.d/ma_environment.conf
warning: %post(MFEcma-5.7.2-162.x86_64) scriptlet failed, exit status 1
installing client extensions from : /tmp/mfej6EmWZ /tmp/mfej6EmWZ
Product count is : 1
Product is : DXL.zip
Calling mcupdater : location : /tmp/mfej6EmWZ

You see errors in the masvc<computer name>.log similar to:

maconfig.Info: McAfee Agent DB Healthcheck and restore initiated.2021-01-06 14:41:51.316 (4765.4765) maconfig.Info: agent db check started
maconfig.Info: check all db files.
maconfig.Info: MA db files are not present, so skipping database schema check (fresh installation).
maconfig.Info: ma db check passed.
masvc.Error: io service create Failed(1)
maconfig.Info: McAfee Agent DB Healthcheck and restore initiated.
maconfig.Info: agent db check started
maconfig.Info: check all db files.
maconfig.Info: MA db files are not present, so skipping database schema check (fresh installation).
maconfig.Info: ma db check passed.
masvc.Error: io service create Failed(1)

Cause

The /etc/.profile is missing, which causes the creation of the McAfee Agent service to fail. This file is used to set environmental items for a users shell, like umask and variables such as path.

Solution

This issue is resolved in McAfee Agent 5.7.3. This version is available from either the ePO Software Manager or the Product Downloads site.

Workaround 1

Remove the McAfee Agent on the Linux operating system and create a temporary profile:

Open a command prompt as root user.
At the command prompt, type:

rpm -e MFEcma MFErt MFEdx
When removed, create a temporary profile with the following command:

touch /root/.profile
Reinstall the McAfee Agent.
After installation of the McAfee Agent, if the /root/.profile file created using the touch command above, you can remove the file.

Workaround 2

Only implement the steps below if you see the same errors after following Workaround 1:

McAfee Agent fails to obtain the environment variables when the installation has completed via a sudo command. and a manual reprovision must be performed.

Open a command prompt as root user.
Change directory to:

# cd /opt/McAfee/agent/bin/
Run the following command

# ./maconfig -provision -managed -auto -dir /var/McAfee/agent/keystore -epo <ip:8443>

NOTE: Enter in your ePO IP address and correct port number.

Example: maconfig -provision -managed -auto -dir /var/McAfee/agent/keystore -epo 1.2.3.4:8443

You are prompted to enter in the ePO administrator user name and password.
