Macompatsvc.exe crashes Windows Management Instrumentation on Windows servers

Environment

McAfee Agent (MA) 5.7.0, 5.7.1, 5.6.x

Problem

System crash occurs on supported Windows Servers. The crash points to a McAfee Agent Macompatsvc.exe process.

McAfee Agent uses Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) to obtain system properties. For example:

Serial Number
Original equipment manufacturer (OEM) ID
System model
Manufacturer and Users Unique Identifier (UUID)

Cause

The McAfee Agent makes IWbemServices calls to send WMI queries to get the values. At times, macompatsvc.exe does not properly release the objects returned from the finalizing operations in the Arbitrator’s queue. The result is more WMI active operations in the system, which in turn results in resource leaks.

Solution

This issue is resolved in McAfee Agent 5.7.2, which is available from either the ePO Software Manager, or the Product Downloads site.

Workaround

We investigated this issue and a Proof of Concept (POC) Build is currently available to resolve the issue. To obtain the POC Build, log on to the ServicePortal and create a Service Request. Include this article number in the Problem Description field.
