Environment

ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO) 5.10.0 Update 3

Problem

The following symptoms are seen after successfully installing ePO 5.10 Update 3.

The following error is seen after executing some queries, for example, VSE: DAT Deployment query:

An unexpected error occurred

Some dashboard monitors can fail and show the error below:

This monitor can't be displayed due to an unrecoverable error

Orion.log records errors similar to the following:

servlet.ControllerServlet - Exception thrown by ActionBean:
com.mcafee.orion.core.template.db.exception.ExecuteTransactionException: Conversion failed when converting the nvarchar value 'Srv' to data type int.

Or

servlet.ControllerServlet - Exception thrown by ActionBean:
com.mcafee.orion.core.template.db.exception.ExecuteTransactionException: Conversion failed when converting the nvarchar value 'Wrk' to data type int.

System Change

You've applied ePO 5.10 cumulative Update 3.

Cause

This issue is caused by some systems running old versions of VirusScan Enterprise (VSE). Specifically, there's an entry in the ePO database for an old version of VSE.

The older VSE versions previously included a '.Wrk' or '.Srv' suffix in the product version to indicate whether the client is a workstation or server. In ePO 5.10 Update 3, the canned queries have been upgraded to use a new method of comparing versions. Because the new method handles only integers, it fails when it reaches the suffix entry in the database.

Solution

This issue is resolved in ePolicy Orchestrator 5.10.0 Update 5, which is available from the Product Downloads site.

Workaround

Identify the affected systems in ePO, and take one of the following actions:

If the system is still active, upgrade the managed product to a supported version.
If the system is no longer active, delete it from ePO.

To find problem systems:
The easiest way to find problem systems is as follows:

Build a simple managed systems table query in ePO, listing the following:
- System name
- Assigned path
- VSE product version
Scroll through the results and look for systems with '.Srv' or '.Wrk' at the end of the product version string.

NOTES:
- Unfortunately, you can't filter the query for these systems because you can't filter the version for 'contains'.
- If you have many systems, export the results to a .CSV file, and use an external program, for example, Excel or Notepad++, to find lines that contain '.Wrk' or '.Srv.'
