How to use the Opal Hardware Compatibility Tool
Technical Articles ID:
KB76182
Last Modified: 2024-01-06 09:08:16 Etc/GMT EnvironmentDrive Encryption (DE) 7.2.x, 7.1.x
All supported Windows Operating systems. For details of DE supported environments, see KB79422 - Supported platforms for Drive Encryption 7.x. Summary
The Endpoint Encryption Hardware Compatibility Tool gathers data about the Opal drives, Standard and NVMe, and performs some tests on the drive's functionality. Use the tool to test a single Opal drive to verify that it's compatible before you use the Opal features in DE 7.1 and later releases. IMPORTANT: NVMe is only supported with DE 7.2.5 and later. WARNING: If the drive fails to respond to the various Opal commands, it might become permanently unusable. In the worst-case scenario, it might destroy all data on the drive and you must discard your disk. You can restore some drives that end up in this state to their default factory state and they're usable again. But, all data contained on the Opal drive is lost and unrecoverable. This capability is solely dependent on the Opal drive and manufacturer. IMPORTANT: We're not responsible for any data loss or hardware damaged or made unusable by these tests. This tool is provided 'as is' with no warranty, and its operation is specifically excluded from any warranties or other agreements you might have with us. SolutionInstallation
The tool can only be installed on Windows 7 Service Pack 1 or later. This requirement is enforced by both MSI packages and the test program itself. If you try to run the MSI packages on an earlier version of Windows, you receive a message stating the minimum requirements, and the installation is canceled. If the MSI checks are bypassed, the test framework displays an error stating that the operating system isn't supported, none of the tests are run, and no result files are generated. There are two separate MSI packages included in the When the installation is complete, the installer requests that you restart the system. The system must be restarted before you run any of the tests. If you fail to perform the restart, the tests fail but no error is visible. IMPORTANT: Do not install this tool on a system with any version of DE already installed. There are no checks for the presence of DE/EEPC during installation or when running the tests. Running the tests After installation and a system restart, perform the following actions:
Removing the tool To remove the tool, use the standard Windows Programs and Features option in the Windows Control Panel. The entry for this tool is McAfee Endpoint Encryption HCT. Make sure that all tests have completed before you remove the tool; no checks are made by the uninstaller for any tests currently running. WARNING: If a test fails, your computer might not be bootable after you remove the tool.
