Automatic browser update of Google Chrome not disabled on certain versions of Windows VM

Problem

The automatic browser update for Google Chrome isn't completely disabled on the operating system types listed below, when used with TIS 5.x:

Microsoft Windows 8.1 64-bit Enterprise (Update 1 version 6.3 build 9600)
Microsoft Windows 8.1 64-bit Professional (Update 1 version 6.3 build 9600)
Microsoft Windows 8 Professional 32-bit and 64-bit
Microsoft Windows 7 32-bit and 64-bit (Service Pack 1)

The automatic browser update intermittently runs during dynamic analysis, and inflates network activity in the Sandbox environment. It adversely affects disk utilization if the packet capture log feature is enabled, and might potentially affect scan results.

Solution

If you're running any of the affected Windows versions for the Sandbox VM, take the following steps.

Login to the IS 5.x Manager with admin privileges.
Click Manage, Image & Software, Image.
Download the VM Provisioner Tool.
Open your VM disk image file, in either .vmdk or .vhdx format, using the hypervisor that you used to originally create the VM disk image.
Then, start the VM running on your hypervisor.
Copy the VM Provisioner Tool that you downloaded earlier to your VM.
On your VM, uninstall Google Chrome from the Control Panel.
On your VM, delete the Google folder in the registry by performing the steps below:
1. Open the registry editor: Press Windows+R, then type regedit, and press Enter.
2. Navigate in the left panel to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\.
3. Right-click on the Google folder and select Delete.
4. Navigate in the left panel to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\.
5. Right-click on the Google folder and select Delete.
On your VM, remove the Google folder from the program folder by performing the following steps:
1. Open File Explorer and navigate to the following locations:
  - C:\Program Files
  - C:\Program Files (x86)
2. If a Google folder exists in either location, right-click on it and select Delete.
On your VM, install the required version of Google Chrome.
On your VM, run the VM Provisioner Tool.
Gracefully shutdown the VM.
Follow the Installation Guide to upload the .vmdk or .vhdx VM image file to IS; convert, activate, or validate the VM in TIS; create the VM profile.
