SummarySecurity researchers presented details of "Operation Newton" at the 2021 Virus Bulletin International Conference. The attacks targeted scientific researchers with the AppleSeed malware family using spear-phishing emails sent from Gmail and Daum email addresses. The backdoor is attributed to the Kimsuky threat group and continues to evolve since appearing on the threat landscape in 2019. Meterpreter, Putty, PortScan, and HeidiSQL were used to carry out the infection process. Our Threat Research team gathers and analyzes information from multiple open and closed sources before disseminating intelligence reports.
