SummaryThe Spiral threat group exploited a vulnerability in the SolarWinds Orion API. The flaw is classified under CVE-2020-10148 and is due to an authentication bypass defect in the application. The actor exploited the flaw and used PowerShell to deploy the Supernova .NET web shell. The malicious software is a weaponized version of a legitimate DLL file used by the SolarWinds Orion software. The malware allowed Spiral to perform reconnaissance and exfiltrate stolen credentials and sensitive information to command and control servers. Our Threat Research team gathers and analyzes information from multiple open and closed sources before disseminating intelligence reports. This campaign was researched by Cisco and shared publicly.
