SummaryThe TA428 threat group targeted the defense and aviation sectors in East Asia with the nccTrojan RAT. The malware, also known as MsmRAT, has been on the threat landscape since at least 2019. Version 1 of the remote access trojan will exist if a mutex named "msm_1.6_Mutex" is already present on the system. Version 2 will register itself as a Windows service for persistence. Both versions encode the data when communicating with command and control servers. Our Threat Research team gathers and analyzes information from multiple open and closed sources before disseminating intelligence reports. This campaign was researched by NTT Security and shared publicly. How to use this article:

Detection Summary
Minimum set of Manual Rules to improve protection to block this campaign IMPORTANT: Always follow best practices when you enable new rules and signatures. When you implement new rules or signatures, always set them to Report mode first and check the alerts generated. Resolve any issues that arise and then set the rules to Block. This step mitigates against triggering false positives and allows you to refine your configuration.
