Trellix Agent Servers on Red Hat 8.1 and later are reported as Workstations

Environment

Agent 5.6.x

Red Hat 8.1 and later

NOTE: McAfee Agent has been rebranded to Trellix Agent (TA) in version 5.7.7.

Problem

When the Agent is installed on a Red Hat 8.1 or later server, TA incorrectly reports to ePO that it's a workstation. The details are recorded in the OS Platform field.

TA reads information provided from the Red Hat system from: /etc/redhat-release

Example:

[root@mylinux ~]# cat /etc/redhat-release
Red Hat Enterprise Linux release 8.1 (Ootpa)

There's no reference in this folder whether the system is a server or workstation. So, TA reports the default back to ePO as a Workstation.

Solution

This issue is resolved with Agent 5.7.0.

TA has changed the way the system is reported to ePO. It now does so by reading the contents of the syspurpose.json file.

When syspurpose is set to Server (Server must start with a capital S), TA reports the system as Server.
When syspurpose is set to Client (Client must start with capital C), TA reports the system as Client.
In other scenarios, including when no role is set, TA reports the system as Workstation.

NOTES:

Make sure that you've set the correct information about the system being a Server or Workstation.

The Server/Workstation type on RHEL 7.8 or earlier still depends on the content of /etc/redhat-release.
You might need to reboot for TA to read the updated settings.
