Environment

McAfee Agent (MA) 5.x

Problem

When the McAfee Agent is configured to update from the Master Repository, it actually uses the Agent Handler to which it reports. If the McAfee Agent is assigned an Agent Handler group that only has the Virtual DNS name configured, the Agent has no IP address to contact the Agent Handler. As a result, tasks such as update and deployment tasks fail when you try to use the Master Repository.

The following errors are recorded in the mcscript.log (for updates), and mcscript_deploy.log (for deployments):

downloader Getting server ip from <handler group name> Failed.
creposi Trying the repository <handler group name>
creposi Repository <handler group name> is not usable for the current update session

Where <handler group name> is the name of the Agent Handler group assigned to the client.

Cause

The script engine can't move on to the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) of the Agent Handler, if the IP address is missing.

According to the ePO Product Guide, you must provide the following settings:

Virtual DNS name
Virtual IP address

Solution

You must configure both the Virtual DNS name and the Virtual IP address:

Click Menu, Configuration, Agent Handlers.
In the Handler Group dashboard, click New Group and create Agent Handler groups.
From the Agent Handlers Add/Edit Group page, configure the group settings stated below:
- Group Name = Type a name for the Agent Handler group.
- Included Handlers - Allows you to:
  - Click Use load balancer to use a third-party load balancer, then type the Virtual DNS Name, and Virtual IP address in the fields (both are required).
  - Click Use custom handler list and use + and – to add and remove Agent Handlers. Use the drag-and-drop handle to change the priority of Agent Handlers.
Click Save.

Workaround

Configure a dummy virtual IP address for the Agent Handler group. It does not have to be the actual IP address of an Agent Handler. Use an IP address in your address space, which you know is unused.

The tasks using the Master Repository function correctly:

After the clients have communicated with ePO
And
When the clients have received the new Agent Handler group details

The script engine tries to connect to the dummy IP address and fails; it then correctly moves on, and tries the virtual DNS name.
