McAfee Agent 5.6.0 and later report the Mac operating system as either 'macOS' or 'MAC OS X'

Environment

McAfee Agent (MA) 5.6.0 and later

Problem

After you install McAfee Agent 5.6.0 or later, reports start to show one of the following two Mac operating systems tags:

macOS
Mac OS X

Depending on which version of McAfee Agent is installed, the following is seen:

Unsupported, earlier builds such as McAfee Agent 5.5.1 and earlier, only report the OS type as Mac OS X.
McAfee Agent 5.6.0 and later report the OS types as either macOS or Mac OS X.

Cause

This behavior is expected. According to Apple standards, Mac operating systems later than 10.12 are known as macOS. Earlier Mac operating systems are known as Mac OS X.

Agent releases before MA 5.6.0 were only able to report the OS type as Mac OS X. But 5.6.0 and later can correctly report either Mac OS X or macOS depending on the client's installed operating system.

Solution

McAfee Agent 5.6.0 and later report the following client OS type property:

Mac Operating system	OS Type (Found in the System Properties tab of the ePO console)
Mac OS 10.13.6 (High Sierra) and later	macOS
Mac OS.10.12.6 (Sierra)	macOS
Mac OS 10.11.3 and earlier	Mac OS X
