UEFI systems fail to boot after applying a Windows 10 update

Environment

Drive Encryption (DE) 7.2.6 and earlier

Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) systems

Problem 1

The system doesn't boot after you apply Windows updates that contain updated Microsoft UEFI boot loader files.

During startup, a Windows recovery screen is displayed, with the following error message:

The application or operating system couldn’t be loaded because a required file
is missing or contains errors: File: \windows\system32\winload.efi. Error code:
0xc0000225

Your PC needs to be repaired. Error code: 0xc000022

Problem 2

The issue is seen on systems where the disk or volume layout has changed. The change is in such a way that the following path no longer points to the correct hard-disk volume of the EFI system partition:

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MfeEpeRp

ReparseSrc = \Device\HarddiskVolume1\EFI\McAfee\Epe\msboot.efi
ReparseDst = \Device\HarddiskVolume1\EFI\Microsoft\Boot\bootmgfw.efi

Cause

Two situations have been identified that can cause the registry to become incorrect:

A hard drive is connected to the system that appears before the boot disk (for example: disk0, making the boot disk become disk1).
A partition is added before the EFI system partition, which changes the index of the EFI system partition.

Solution

The Issue is resolved with DE 7.2.7 and later.
