McAfee has introduced a new feature to unpack and scan files within ISO files.
Anti-Malware Scan Engine limitations
- Unpacking is limited to ISO files that are smaller than 32 MB.
Every file of the ISO is scanned, if the ISO itself is less than 32 MB in size.
- A maximum of 50 files are unpacked by traversing a maximum of 10 folders recursively.
The 50 files and 10 folder limit, is pertaining to archives within the ISO.
Frequently Asked Questions:
How do I check whether on-access scanning of ISO files is affecting system performance?
Use McAfee Profiler for Endpoint Security for Windows or VirusScan Enterprise. Profiler captures top files and processes that on-access scan accesses. Based on the data collected, you can decide whether you want to exclude an ISO file from scanning to reduce the impact on the system. For information about Profiler, see
KB69683.
Can I prevent an ISO file from being scanned?
Yes. Create a file or folder exclusion for the ISO file.
Is there a performance impact when scanning ISO files?
When there are many small ISO files that contain CAB or ZIP archives, and these archives also have many archive files, there can be a performance impact if the driver sends these files to rescan. But, these cases are rare.
Can I prevent an ISO file from being scanned?
Yes, by using either of the following methods:
- Create a file or folder exclusion for the ISO file.
- Exclude files or the file type.
How did the earlier releases of the Anti-Malware Scan Engine deal with an ISO?
Previous releases did not scan ISO file contents.
Do I need to enable the archive scanning setting to scan ISO files?
No. ISO files are scanned with the basic on-access and on-demand settings, for ISO files less than 32 MB in size.
