Smart card reader not present or Unsuitable card (reported at preboot on Dell systems that are fitted with a Broadcom internal reader)

Environment

Drive Encryption (DE) 7.1.3 and earlier, 7.2.0

Microsoft Windows 10

Dell systems identified to have the Broadcom internal reader (others may exist):

Dell Latitude 7470, 7270, and 5550
Dell Precision 7510

Problem

Internal Broadcom Smart Card readers aren't detected during the PreBoot Authentication (PBA) screen on multiple Dell systems.

During PBA, one of the following errors displays:

Error EE080006 - Smartcard error not present

Unsuitable card

These issues are seen on systems where the BIOS is configured to use the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface.

Solution 1

This issue is resolved with DE 7.2.1, which is available on the Product Downloads site. The DE code has been changed to apply to all Broadcom CCID readers with product IDs starting with 58xx.

Solution 2

This issue is resolved in DE 7.1 Patch 3 Hotfix 1208296 (HF1208296) build 7.1.3.628, which is available from the Product Downloads site.
