DAT file update fails both manually and from a scheduled task

Environment

McAfee Agent (MA) 5.6.x, 5.5.x

Problem

An attempt to update DAT files fails, either manually or from a scheduled task.

The McScript.log file records errors similar to the following:

I #10960 ScrptMgr Error occurred while downloading C:\ProgramData\McAfee\Agent\\Current\AMCORDAT2000\DAT\0000\PkgCatalog.z.

Cause

The amcore.mcs script tries to install AMCore updating components. This operation fails when an unsigned DLL is injected into the mcscript_inuse.exe process.

Solution

Do not run a REG file that is not confirmed to be a genuine registry import file.

If Apple Software Update, QuickTime, or Apple Application Support are installed, disable the Apple Bonjour .dll:

Press the Windows key + R, type regedit, and press Enter.
Navigate to the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\WinSock2\Parameters\NameSpace_Catalog5\Catalog_Entries\00000000000n

NOTE: The dll registry key (00000000000n) can differ, depending on the install environment.
Right-click the key Enabled, and click Modify
Change the Value data to 0.
Reboot the system, and try the DAT update again.

Workaround

If there are no Apple products or services installed, disable McAfee Agent Self-Protection in ePolicy Orchestrator and perform the update again. Enable Self-Protection after the DAT update completes.
