Upgrade to Application and Change Control fails for endpoints

Environment

Application and Change Control (ACC) 8.x.x, 7.x.x, 6.x.x

Problem

An upgrade to ACC fails for an endpoint, and there's no notification in ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO) about the failure.

Cause

This issue occurs if a program removes the PendMove entries from the registry. ACC uses the PendMove registry key during an upgrade to rename files on reboot.

Solution

This issue has been corrected in ACC 8.2.1-407 (Update 5).

Workaround

Perform the following workaround if you're unable to upgrade to ACC 8.2.1-407 (Update 5):

Before proceeding, Technical Support strongly recommends that you back up your registry and understand the restore process. For more information, see the Microsoft Windows registry information for advanced users article.
Do not run a REG file that is not confirmed to be a genuine registry import file.

Place the system in Update mode using the following command:

sadmin bu
Create an InstaConfigAccess DWORD value:
1. Click Start, Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
2. Locate the following registry key:
  
  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\swin\parameters
3. Right-click parameters and select New, DWORD Value.
4. Type InstaConfigAccess in the New Value field and press Enter.
5. Right-click InstaConfigAccess and click Modify.
6. In the Value data field, type 1.
7. Click OK.
Run the following command:

instaconfig.exe /upgrade <license_type>

Here, license_type equals one of the following:
- 0 (unlicensed)
- 1 (Application Control license)
- 2 (Change Control license)
- 3 (Both Application Control and Change Control license or Integrity Control)
Delete the DWORD value InstaConfigAccess created in step 2.
End Update mode using the following command:

sadmin eu
Restart the system.
