ERROR 1205 (HY000): Lock wait timeout exceeded; try restarting transaction (Manager Database Purging fails)

Trellix Intrusion Prevention System (Trellix IPS)

IMPORTANT: Trellix IPS Manager has transitioned from MySQL to MariaDB.

The Database used in Manager 9.1 changes to MariaDB with release 9.1.7.77.
This article features different steps if using Manager 9.1.7.77 and later.

IMPORTANT:
Before you make changes to the database, ensure that you have taken an all table backup. For guidance on the backup, see the "Using the database admin tool" section of the NSP Manager Administration Guide for your release. When you have completed the backup, then perform the following solution.

Problem

A manual database purge (DBadmin.bat) fails and returns the following errors:

delete from iv_alert where creationTime<'2014-10-10 23:59:00';
ERROR 1205 (HY000): Lock wait timeout exceeded; try restarting transaction
delete from iv_alert where creationTime<'2014-10-09 23:59:00';
ERROR 1205 (HY000): Lock wait timeout exceeded; try restarting transaction

Cause

The number of records that need to be deleted exceeds the buffer pool size value of the database.

Solution

Delete the data in multiple smaller amounts. To purge the data in smaller chunks, execute the following command from the Manager Database prompt:

CALL sp_deletedata('<table>','<date> <time>');

For example, CALL sp_deletedata('iv_packetlog','2014-11-27 11:23:15');
