How to enable Pre-Boot Smart Check to troubleshoot systems that become unresponsive before preboot authentication
Technical Articles ID:
KB83322
Last Modified: 2024-01-06 10:02:55 Etc/GMT Environment
Drive Encryption (DE) 7.1.x Dell Latitude 3340 NOTE: This solution also applies to other manufacturer and computer models. For details of DE supported environments, see KB79422 - Supported platforms for Drive Encryption 7.x. ProblemDuring system startup, the system becomes unresponsive while trying to load the preboot authentication screen.
The preboot authentication screen fails to load after you successfully install DE, add users, encrypt the disk, and restart the system. Only a blank background screen is generally shown. The user is unable to authenticate at preboot. When the system is decrypted and deactivated, the system can successfully boot into Windows. SolutionTo resolve this compatibility issue, decrypt the computer and enable the option Enable Pre-Boot Smart Check before you redeploy DE.

Related InformationThe following Pre-Boot Smart Check details have been included in several DE Known Issues articles to assist in overcoming problems with some systems.
Example taken from KB84502 - Drive Encryption 7.x Known Issues: Issue: Hardware incompatibility incurred during deployment.
Resolution: Before deploying DE to your site, we recommend that customers qualify the product first on a subset of the hardware used throughout your environment. If during this test deployment hardware, compatibility issues are encountered, we recommend the usage of the feature Pre-Boot Smart Check, as this can overcome a number of common compatibility issues. By performing the 'PreBoot Smart Check' ahead of the rollout, a customer can scope which computers might require this feature to be enabled during production deployment.
