Client always shows the System State as Inactive (on systems with a Virtual Hard Disk)

Environment

Drive Encryption (DE) 7.1.x
Endpoint Encryption for PC (EEPC) 7.0.x

Problem 1

Some systems fail to activate after successfully installing DE.

Post installation, DE or EEPC activation fails on computers with Logical Drives that are configured as a Virtual Hard Disk (VHD).

Client side:
The user sees the following on the client in the Encryption System Status window, even though the encryption policy is activated in ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO):

System State	Inactive
Volume Status	No volume information
Progress	Progress bar shows no encryption activity

ePO Console:
The administrator sees the following Client System Details for DE.

State

In-Active

Clicking on More, Disks shows the following message:

No details available, as Drive Encryption is not Active

Problem 2

MfeEpe.log on the client records the following error:

[0xEE000004] System is not active, cannot enumerate disks

Cause

VHD dynamic disks that expand when mounted aren't supported.

NOTE: Support for logical drives can't be supported because they're not accessible through the BIOS.

Solution

This is expected behavior. Only the following formatted hard-disk types are supported:

Windows Basic Master Boot Record
GUID Partition Table (GPT) / GPO type

NOTE: GPT drives aren't supported as a boot disk; they're supported only as a secondary disk. Also, the Operating System must support the secondary drive in GPT mode, and the BIOS must support large disks for DETech (Standalone) to be able to recover the drive(s).
