HP ElitePad 900 Tablet touch screen doesn't function during preboot

Environment

Drive Encryption (DE) 7.1

Hewlett Packard (HP) ElitePad 900 G1 Tablet (HP ElitePad firmware/driver updates 1.0.0.9)

Problem

After you successfully install DE, encrypt the drive, and restart, users are unable to authenticate at preboot on an HP ElitePad 900 because the touch screen fails to function.

NOTES:

Support for the touch screen was verified as supported using the DE touch-screen testing tool in KB78050 - How to use the Drive Encryption UEFI testing tool to verify if your tablet responds to the touch interface.

NOTE: The DE touch-screen test passed because on this HP model, the Absolute Pointer Protocol was enabled, but it wasn't attached to any device. So, any application that tried to use the Absolute Pointer Protocol to issue commands wouldn't get translated to the underlying hardware.

Connecting a physical mouse allowed the user to access the On Screen Keyboard (OSK) to perform the required key strokes.
After entering the BIOS Startup Menu by holding the down volume button, and then selecting "ENTER – Continue Startup" from the menu, the touch mouse and OSK both functioned correctly.

System Change

Updated the HP ElitePad 900 Driver and Firmware.

Cause

The investigation by Trellix and HP identified that several firmware and device driver updates were missing.

Solution

A new BIOS or Firmware and driver update package being created and posted on the HP support site. The fix for this issue was first introduced in firmware version 1.0.1.1 (July 24, 2013).

Download and install the updated HP ElitePad 900 BIOS or Firmware and Driver update package.

IMPORTANT: If you incur issues during preboot, visit the manufacturer's website to obtain the latest driver releases. Installing the latest driver often resolves the issue.
