Unable to log on to the ePO console (Extensions are disabled after an upgrade)

Environment

ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO) 5.x

Problem 1

You're unable to log on to the ePO console. This problem is seen after you upgrade to ePO 5.x and restart the system or restart the ePO services.

The following message displays when the above occurs:

Extensions are disabled

Problem 2

The Orion.log records the following errors:

System Change

The ePO server has successfully upgraded, and the Tomcat service or system is restarted.

Cause

The ePO upgrade installer sets a registry key that identifies the extensions that aren't loaded at startup. During this stage, it leaves the Tomcat service in the install mode. When the services (or system) are restarted, the Tomcat service remains in install mode.

This issue occurs when MsiExec.exe crashes during the ePO upgrade.

When this crash occurs, the following occur:

A new PID is created for the MsiExec.exe process.
The installer is unable to identify what parts of the upgrade installation to clean up.

Solution

Remove the registry key of the incorrect data:

Do not run a REG file that is not confirmed to be a genuine registry import file.

Open the registry editor. Press Windows+R, type regedit, and click OK.
Navigate to the appropriate location:

64-bit:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Apache Software Foundation\Procrun 2.0\MCAFEETOMCATSRV530\Parameters\Java

32-bit:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Apache Software Foundation\Procrun 2.0\MCAFEETOMCATSRV250\Parameters\Java
Make a backup of the reg_multi_sz key named Options.
Double-click the Options key and remove the line that starts with the following:

-Dorion.disable-plugins=
Exit the registry editor.
Press Windows+R, type services.msc, and click OK.
Right-click each of the following ePO services, and click Restart:
- McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator Server
- McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator Application Server
- McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator Event Parser
Attempt to log on to the ePO console again.
