Enterprise Security Manager log indicates that the database is rebuilding but never finishes after a restart

Environment

SIEM Enterprise Security Manager (ESM) 11.x

Problem

You restart your SIEM ESM device and try to log on. You see a message that the database is rebuilding.

When you look through the messages log /var/log/messages, you see the following errors:

IPSDBServerctl[2727]: Notice: signal CHLD, 11952 reclaimed. Exit status: 222. Signal number: 0. IPSDBServer
IPSDBServerctl[2727]: Info: Started process IPSDBServer[11952]
healthmon.init[2860]: Database rebuilding...
IPSDBServerctl[2727]: Warning: checkProc: process (IPSDBServer[11952]) failed kill 0
IPSDBServerctl[2727]: Warning: Restarting IPSDBServer. Restart count: 8775981.
IPSDBServer[11987]: Starting (Parent pid) = 2727
IPSDBServer[11987]: Key Validation Failed - Terminating.

NOTE: The database rebuilding process can sometimes take up to 10 hours. Anything over 10 hours indicates a problem.

Cause

The Key Validation Failed message in the logs indicates that the Activation Key for the ESM has become corrupt, or that a hardware change has occurred. There are many ways that the Activation Key can become corrupt. When it does, the database doesn't start. Instead, a continual loop occurs during the rebuild. This loop is a safety mechanism. It prevents the software from running on unsupported hardware, or from running in a state that might corrupt the database.

If you see this error message, contact Technical Support and quote this article number KB77226. You're requested to provide the following information:

Output from the command cat /etc/buildstamp
Output from the command actver
