Environment

Drive Encryption (DE) 7.x

All Microsoft Windows supported platforms running in BIOS mode.

Dell models affected:

E6510 (BIOS: A12)
E6410ATG (BIOS I13)
E6420: (BIOS A13)

Problem

When you perform an out-of-band remote remediation to initiate an Emergency Boot, it might fail on some Dell models. Known Dell models are listed in the "Environment" field with the respective BIOS release.

On the client, the system fails to enter into Windows as expected. The user is instead presented with the preboot authentication screen.

NOTE: Performing a local emergency boot using a DETech CD or DVD is successful.

Cause

When the system is started in IDE-Redirection (IDE-R) mode, the BIOS doesn't allow access to the disks via INT 13.

Solution

This issue is resolved by contacting Dell Technical Support to obtain a BIOS update.
