How to solve permission errors on MSSQL connection validation

Environment

Database Activity Monitoring 4.x
Vulnerability Manager for Databases (DVM) 4.x

Problem

You test a newly added Database Management System (DBMS) for DVM. During the first test run, you see a permissions error similar to the following:

Cannot create PoolableConnectionFactory (I/O Error: DB server closed connection.)

NOTE: The same credentials that returned the error can successfully connect to the SQL Server manager or another SQL tool.

Cause

This issue can occur on some systems because of a newly introduced permissions validation procedure in DVM 4.4.0 and later. The configured user doesn't have sufficient permissions to run all tests available in the system on all databases within the instance.

Another possible cause for the issue may be that the MSSQL instance is forcing SSL connectivity.

Solution 1

To verify and fix the problem, perform the following steps:

Click Start, Run, type services.msc, and click OK.
Right-click the McAfee Database Security service and click Stop.
Click Start, Run, type explorer and click OK.
Navigate to:

C:\Program Files\McAfee\McAfee Database Security\conf
Open the server-custom.properties file for editing.

NOTE: In Sentrigo Hedgehog, the file name is sentrigo-custom.properties.
Add the following entry in a new line: va.perm.mssql=select 1
Click File, Save.
Click Start, Run, type services.msc, and click OK.
Right-click the McAfee Database Security service and click Start.

Solution 2

Add the following to the Advanced properties of the DBMS connection if the MSSQL instance is forcing SSL connectivity:

Log on to the Database Security console.
Click the DBMS tab.
Click Properties for the DBMS connection in question.
Expand the Advanced entry and add the following: ssl=true
Click Save.
