Summary

The Trellix IPS Upgrade Guide describes how to upgrade the Sensor software on both Sensors simultaneously, and then reboot them individually.

To avoid issues and outages during the Sensor upgrade, administrators requested an alternative method for upgrade. In this upgrade method, one Sensor is updated and rebooted, while the other Sensor remains online as a backup.

This method offers a rollback route if there are problems with the upgrade.

Solution

To upgrade the Sensors separately, perform the steps below:

From the Manager, upgrade the primary Sensor to the new software and reboot it. Make sure that you switch traffic to the secondary Sensor.
Manually push the configuration so that the primary Sensor receives the new signature.

NOTE: A Sensor sigfile format version error appears on the secondary Sensor. This error can be ignored. The signature file is compiled for the upgraded software on the primary Sensor and isn't compatible with the old software on the secondary Sensor.
Confirm that the primary Sensor has received the signature set:
- If the configuration and signature push to the primary Sensor fails, downgrade the software on the primary Sensor software and reboot it.
- If the push succeeds, upgrade the secondary Sensor to the new software version and reboot it.
Push the configuration to the secondary Sensor.

Both Sensors are now updated and handle traffic.
