Unable to log on to the ePO console after changing the password of the account used to connect to SQL

Environment

ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO) 5.x

Problem 1

You are unable to log on to the ePO console.

Problem 2

The ePO log on screen displays the following:

Log on to McAfee Foundation Services

When this error displays, the language can't be selected.

The orion.log records the following error:

ERROR: [com.mcafee.orion.core.db.base.Database]: Constructor threw exception; nested exception is java.sql.SQLException: Login failed.
The login is from an untrusted domain and cannot be used with Windows authentication.
CommonEvents - Dependency ComputerMgmt had initialization error

System Change

The password of the account that is used to connect ePO to SQL has changed.

Cause

The password was not changed in the ePO Database Settings page.

Solution 1

On the ePO Database Settings page, change the database account information:

Log on to the ePO Database Settings page: https://localhost:8443/core/config-auth, where 8443 is the ePO console port.
Type the password of the account you are using to connect to SQL in the User password field.
Retype the password in the Confirm password field.
Click Test Connection to verify the new password connection to the SQL database.
Click Apply and close the Database Settings page.

Solution 2

If you can't log on to the Database Settings page because you are using a remote console, do the following:

Change the password of the account back to the previous one used to connect to SQL.
Log on to the ePO Database Settings page: https://localhost:8443/core/config-auth, where 8443 is the ePO console port.
Type the password of the account you are using to connect to SQL in the User password field.
Retype this password in the Confirm password field.
Click Test Connection to verify the new password connection to the SQL database.
Click Apply and close the Database Settings page.

Solution 3

If you are unable to open the Database Settings page because of invalid credentials on the https://localhost:8443/core/config-auth page, do the following:

WARNING: These steps are not supported on Remote Agent Handler. When you need to change the database passwords in the db.properties file on Remote Agent Handler, follow the steps in KB75333 - Remote Agent Handler fails to connect to the database after changing the database credentials.

NOTE: Port 8443 is the ePO console port for the following steps.

Back up the db.properties file, located by default in <ePO installation directory>\server\conf\orion\.
Press Windows+R, type services.msc, and click OK.
Right-click each of the following ePO services and click Stop:

McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator x.x.x Application Server
McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator x.x.x Event Parser
McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator x.x.x Server
Edit the original db.properties in Notepad.
Remove any value after the equal sign (=) for the following entries:

db.user.domain=
db.user.passwd.encrypted=
Save the db.properties file.
Right-click the following ePO service and click Start:

McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator x.x.x Application Server

Open the Database Settings page again and make the needed changes:

Open https://localhost:8443/core/config again on the ePO server.
In the User name field, type the name of the account you are using to connect to SQL.
In the User domain field, type the domain name to which ePO is joined.

NOTE: If you are using SQL authentication, leave this field blank.
Type the password of the account you are using to connect to SQL in the User password field.
Retype this password in the Confirm password field.
Click Test Connection to verify the new password connection to the SQL database.
Click Apply and close the Database Settings page.
Press Windows+R, type services.msc, and click OK.
Right-click the following ePO service and click Restart:

McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator x.x.x Application Server
Right-click each of the following ePO services and click Start:

McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator x.x.x Event Parser
McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator x.x.x Server
