Some appliances formerly provided by Secure Computing have a System Event Log (SEL) that logs all hardware error messages encountered. When you run the system diagnostics, it goes back through the logs and reports any logged errors. This action often makes it unclear if the errors reported are logged errors or current errors. For this reason, it is a good idea to clear the SEL after you resolve hardware problems.
Web Gateway exceptions (these appliances do not have an SEL): WW1100E, SME500E, SME250E, WW2900C, WW500C, WW1100B, WW1900, and SME250
To clear the SEL, use the appropriate procedure for your model.
Procedure for the following Web Gateway models: WW1900E, WW1900D, WW2900C, and WW1900C
- Reboot the appliance.
- Press Ctrl+E when prompted to enter the Remote Access Setup. A menu displays.
- Select System Event Log menu. You are presented with the option to either view or clear the SEL.
- Select the option Clear System Event Log.
- Reboot the appliance and you return to normal operation. Or, continue troubleshooting as needed.
Procedure for all other models:
- Open a command prompt on your Windows system:
- Click Start.
- Find and click Run. The Run window appears.
- Type cmd in the Open: field and click OK. A Windows command prompt opens.
- Download the file ipmicd.iso with the following commands:
ftp ftp.support.securecomputing.com
The user name is anonymous.
The password is your email address.
cd outgoing
bin
get ipmicd.iso
- Obtain a blank CD and burn the file ipmicd.iso as an ISO image.
- Put the CD in the appliance and reboot the appliance. After the appliance boots from the CD, press Enter to activate the console.
- (Optional) If needed, copy the SEL/ESM data to a floppy disk or a USB drive before you clear it. For example, you might copy it to send it to Technical Support.
- To copy SEL/ESM log data to a file on floppy:
- Insert a formatted floppy disk.
- Type: # sel2floppy
- To copy SEL/ESM log data to a file on USB:
- Insert the USB drive.
- Run dmesg and find out the device name of the USB drive. For example, sda, sdb.
- Mount the USB drive:
Type mount /dev/sdX1 /mnt/usb and press Enter.
- Run: sel2usb.sh
NOTE: Writing to the USB drive might not work on all hardware platforms. In that case, use the floppy disk instead.
- Clear the SEL. Type clearsel and press Enter.
When the process starts, you see the message:
Clearing SEL. Please allow a few seconds to erase.
Wait 60 seconds before you restart the appliance.
- Reboot the appliance and you return to normal operation. Or, continue troubleshooting as needed.
