Endpoint Security product updates and deployments fail after upgrade to McAfee Agent 5.6.x

Environment

Endpoint Security (ENS) Threat Prevention 10.7.x, 10.6.x
McAfee Agent (MA) 5.6.x

Problem

After you upgrade to MA 5.6.x, you experience failures when you run ENS product update and deployment tasks.

The masvc_<computer_name>.log file records the following errors:

masvc(7752.7828) Updater.Debug: Coping C:\Program Files\McAfee\Agent\x86\Mue.exe to C:\Program Files\McAfee\Agent\x86\McScript_InUse.exe.
masvc(7752.7828) Updater.Error: Failed to copy C:\Program Files\McAfee\Agent\x86\Mue.exe to C:\Program Files\McAfee\Agent\x86\McScript_InUse.exe for starting engine , 2109.
masvc(7752.7828) Updater.Error: Failed to launch updater engine process, 2109.
masvc(7752.7828) Updater.Error: Failed to start mue session for initiator type = 1, task id = <MA_RunNow_71_{1d29dd44-de19-11e9-12f0-297ea74a42ab}>, rc=<2109>.

Cause

The SYSTEM process has a handle lock on McScript_In_Use.

When an update or deployment is invoked, the McScript_InUse.exe file is:

Locked and can't be deleted
Can't be copied or renamed

These issues prevent the task from succeeding.

Solution

This issue is resolved in the ENS 10.6.1 February 2020 Update and ENS 10.7.0 February 2020 Update.

Workaround

Two workarounds are available.

Workaround 1:

Disable ENS Self-Protection.
Kill the mfeatp.exe process.
Run the client update task.
Enable ENS Self-Protection.

Workaround 2:
To release McScript_InUse, reboot the affected system.
