McAfee Agent unmanaged after using standalone installer DMG

Environment

McAfee Agent (MA) 5.x
Endpoint Security for Mac (ENSM) 10.x

Problem

You have a system with an ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO)-managed MA installed. You use the ENSM standalone .dmg file to install ENSM either locally or through a third-party deployment tool. After the installation of ENSM is completed, the MA on the system is now unmanaged and doesn't communicate with the ePO server.

Solution 1

This behavior is as designed. Perform ENSM deployments and upgrades on an ePO-managed system from ePO through a deployment task.

Solution 2

If you prefer to install ENSM through a third-party deployment tool, perform the following steps:

Download the ePO deployable packages from the ePO Software Catalog or from the Product Downloads site, and extract the .zip files.
From each of the unzipped packages, extract the .pkg file from the .gz tarball.
To install the packages, use this command template (requires root rights):

installer -pkg <Absolute path to .pkg file or path to .pkg file relative to command execution> -target /

Example command executed from the directory in which the Threat Prevention package is located:

installer -pkg McAfee-Threat-Prevention-for-Mac-10.6.4-ePO-client-package-RTW-113.pkg -target /
Repeat the above commands in the deployment task sequence for each of the modules you want to install. Install Threat Prevention or Firewall first and then the subsequent modules following in any order.

If you prefer to install the packages locally on the system without ePO, perform the following steps:

Download the ePO deployable packages from the ePO Software Catalog or from the Product Downloads site, and extract the .zip files.
From each of the unzipped packages, extract the .pkg file from the .gz tarball.
Open the terminal and change directories to the location in which the packages are located.
To install the packages, use this command template:

sudo installer -pkg <Absolute path to .pkg file or path to .pkg file relative to the terminal working directory> -target /

Example command executed from the directory in which the Threat Prevention package is located:

sudo installer -pkg McAfee-Threat-Prevention-for-Mac-10.6.4-ePO-client-package-RTW-113.pkg -target /

Repeat the commands above for each of the modules you want to install. Install Threat Prevention or Firewall first and then the subsequent modules following in any order.
