Environment

Drive Encryption (DE) 7.2.0–7.2.7

Microsoft Windows 10
System configured in the BIOS to use Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI)

Problem 1

After a successful in-place upgrade from Windows 10 version 1709 to version 1803 that uses the upgrade command setup.exe /reflectdrivers, the Go back to the previous version of Windows 10 function fails.

After a system restart, Windows unexpectedly displays the Automatic Repair window. The Automatic Repair Windows feature fails to function and restore access to the operating system.

This problem is only seen on UEFI systems where all disks are encrypted by DE.

Problem 2

After a failed in-place upgrade of Windows 10, the Windows upgrade process tries a rollback.

After the rollback occurs and the system restarts, Windows unexpectedly displays the Automatic Repair window. The Automatic Repair Windows feature fails to function and restore access to the operating system.

This problem is only seen on UEFI systems where all disks are encrypted by DE.

Cause

The DE redirection driver is left inactive after the Windows 10 upgrade, and thus doesn't protect the files during the subsequent downgrade or rollback, or a future upgrade.

Solution

This issue is resolved in DE 7.2.8, which is available from the Product Downloads site.

DE 7.2.8 addresses the upgrade and downgrade issue by rectifying the configuration of the DE driver. We strongly advise customers to upgrade to DE 7.2.8 before performing any Windows 10 operating system upgrades on UEFI systems.
