Environment

Drive Encryption (DE) 7.2.x, 7.1.x

Summary

When using an Opal Drive in a system configured as Legacy BIOS, the drive must have the supported firmware version installed that's listed in KB81136 - Drive Encryption support for Opal drives.

To verify the version of firmware installed, follow one of the methods below.

Solution 1

Command-line method:

Open an administrator command prompt:
1. Click Start.
2. In the Start Search field, type cmd, and then press Ctrl+Shift+Enter.
3. If the User Account Control dialog window appears, confirm that the action it displays is what you want, and then click Continue.
In the command window, type the following command:

wmic diskdrive get caption, firmwarerevision

The model drive is listed under the Caption column, and the firmware version is listed under the FirmwareRevision column.

Solution 2

Device Manager method:

NOTE: The Device Manager method only displays the last four characters of the firmware version. This method doesn't provide enough information to determine if the version of firmware is supported. If more specific versioning information is needed, follow Solution 1.

Open Device Manager.
Expand Disk Drives.
Right-click on the hard drive in question and select Properties.
Click the Details Tab.
From the drop-down list, select Hardware IDs.

The firmware version is the last four characters of the Hardware ID value.
