Environment

Drive Encryption (DE) 7.2.3 (build 7.2.3.28)

Problem

You experience a system crash (blue screen) after you successfully install or upgrade to DE 7.2.3.

The system crash occurs after you connect a USB device, such as a USB media or printer.

Crash dump details include references to the following:

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
MfeEpeOpal.sys

System Change

You installed or upgraded to DE 7.2.3.

Solution

This issue is resolved with DE 7.2.4 (build 7.2.4.2), which is available on the Product Downloads site.

NOTES:

This issue was partially resolved with the reposting of DE 7.2.3 (build 7.2.3.29) for devices known to cause the issue then.
Further issues were reported with other devices and a general fix was provided with DE 7.2.3 Hotfix 1225186 (HF1225186) build 7.2.3.33.
The release of DE 7.2.4 supersedes all other releases.
The DE 7.2.3 software package was removed from the Product Downloads site when DE 7.2.4 was posted to reduce customer exposure to this issue.

Workaround

IMPORTANT: The details below do not apply to systems fitted with Opal disks. Make sure that you check the disk make, model, and encryption method in ePolicy Orchestrator before proceeding.

The following information is intended for System Administrators. Registry modifications are irreversible and could cause system failure if done incorrectly.
Before proceeding, Technical Support strongly recommends that you back up your registry and understand the restore process. For more information, see the Microsoft Windows registry information for advanced users article.
Do not run a REG file that is not confirmed to be a genuine registry import file.

Edit the registry and make sure that the Opal driver isn't loaded.

Press Windows+R, type regedit, and press Enter.
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4d36e967-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\UpperFilters
Right-click UpperFilters and select Modify.
Delete the entry MfeEpeOpal.
Click OK.
Close the registry editor.
Restart the computer.
