Recent updates to this article
DE 7.1 Update 1 introduces a tool that allows the administrator to capture hardware compatibility settings. The tool is intended for use with specific platforms that don't activate.
IMPORTANT: The tool is only designed for Legacy BIOS systems and not UEFI systems.
The hardware-compatibility settings supplied to us via submitted Product Ideas are used to build a file that can be imported to ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO). This file can then be used to activate platforms that exhibit particular issues at preboot.
This feature relies on the following three distinct components:

IMPORTANT: The tool is only designed for Legacy BIOS systems and not UEFI systems.
The hardware-compatibility settings supplied to us via submitted Product Ideas are used to build a file that can be imported to ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO). This file can then be used to activate platforms that exhibit particular issues at preboot.
This feature relies on the following three distinct components:
- A bootable image (
DEPCT.rtb ) that can be used to test for specific hardware compatibility settings. - A Windows-based tool (
DePCTWinTool.exe ) that captures the settings found by the bootable image. This tool gathers specific information that identifies the platform. It also produces a file that's used by us to produce a set of rules. - A Hardware Compatibility List stored in an XML file. This file is provided by us after the information is gathered and sent for review via a submitted Product Idea.
NOTE: The most current version of the XML file is attached to this article (HWDefaultProductDetectionsV#.zip ).
IMPORTANT:- DE 7.2.1 includes version 59 of the XML file.
- DE 7.1 Update 3 (7.1.3) includes version 14 of the XML file.
- A hotfix is needed before implementing the attached XML file with DE 7.1 Update 1 (7.1.1). The hotfix to resolve this issue is available by contacting Technical Support. Include this article number in your Service Request.
- Some resolved issues require the following:
- DE 7.1 Update 3 Hotfix 1208296 (build 7.1.3.628) supersedes DE 7.1.3 Update 3 Hotfix 1164502 (build 7.1.3.613). HF1164502 was only Released to Support (RTS) and is no longer available.
- DE 7.1 Update 3 Hotfix 1131996 (build 7.1.3.590) - This hotfix is posted to the Product Downloads site. See the "Related Information" section for details. Check the Product Downloads site for later releases.

Solution 1
To test for hardware compatibility and collect the results, use the tools provided in the DE 7.1.1 or later package on the client:
- Test for hardware compatibility using
DEPCT.rtb :- Download the tool that's contained in the DE 7.1 Update 1 release.
- Extract the files
DEPCT.rtb andbootdisk.exe . - Create a bootable image.
USB and Floppy Drive example:
To create a bootable floppy or USB media from the command prompt where theDEPCT.rtb file has been extracted, run the following command:
NOTE: Change the drive letter to the drive letter associated with the USB or floppy.
Bootable CD example:
- Run the command below:
Bootdisk.exe DEPCT.RTB <filename>.dsk
- Copy
<filename>.dsk to the bootable CD with the bootable option selected. - Burn it to create the bootable CD.
IMPORTANT: Make sure that you select the Bootable option.
- On the client to be tested, boot the system using the newly created bootable media. After a successful boot, the application prompts the user to select one of the following:
1 - If you want to begin the testing.
2 - To exit from the application.
- Select 1 to run a series of tests:
If the test is successful, a time-out of 30 seconds appears.
- Disk access test using 1,000 iterations of read commands
- Disk access test using 1,000 read or write commands
- USB test where the controllers are accessed for 10 seconds
- Either select to start Windows or wait for the time-out to complete. Windows starts. After successful completion of the Windows boot, if you reboot using the bootable media, you'll be prompted to acknowledge the test results.
- Acknowledge the test results by selecting the appropriate option displayed on the screen:
- The computer successfully boots into Windows after testing.
- The computer fails to boot into Windows after testing.
- The computer restarts because of other reasons. For example, the BIOS stops working and the computer needs to be restarted.
- Stop testing and remove the testing information from the disk.
- After the testing is complete and Windows has started, run the Windows tool
DePCTWinTool.exe provided in the DE package. This tool inspects the computer configuration (WMI and registry) and finds the test results. The Windows tool then allows you to save the results in an XML file.
- Collect the XML file and contact Technical Support. See the "Related Information" section for details.
We review the XML file and, if needed, issue a new XML rule that's appended to this article.
