Environment

File and Removable Media Protection (FRP) 5.x

Adobe Acrobat Reader 10.x and later

Problem

You see the following error when you try to open FRP-encrypted PDF files that use Adobe Reader 10.x and later:

There was an error opening this document. Access denied

Cause

Acrobat Reader 10.x includes a new Protected Mode feature, enabled by default, to prevent security vulnerabilities.

Solution

Open a support case with Adobe and request an investigation.

In the interim, implement the following workaround.

Workaround

Disable Protected Mode in Adobe Reader 11:

Click Edit, Preferences, Security (Enhanced).
In the right pane, deselect Enable Protected Mode At startup.
Close and reopen Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Disable Protected Mode in Adobe Reader 10:

Click Edit, Preferences, General.
In the left pane, deselect Enable Protected Mode At Startup.
Close and reopen Adobe Acrobat Reader.

NOTE: Contact Adobe if you can't implement the changes above. Do not disable Protected Mode in Adobe Acrobat Reader when you try to open an encrypted PDF file from CD/DVD.
